Slags & drosses

Outstanding selective crushing

With our vertical-shaft crushing machines, metals from slag (as defined in DIN 4301) and slag-like materials (e.g., dross, incinerator ash) can be recovered as secondary raw materials. At the same time, their mineral components are processed for reuse as building materials, for example. These materials are classified as follows:

  • Steel mill slag
  • Recycled aluminum slag
  • Aluminum saltcake
  • Stainless steel slag
  • Electric arc furnace slag
  • Incinerator ash
  • Dross (metal content > 45%)

When processing slag from steel mills, the main objective is to recover materials that can be used for construction. Recovering metals is the primary goal in treating slag from smelting plants, incinerator ash, dross and aluminum saltcake. Although these different types of slag and dross have very different properties, all of these materials can be processed in the same BHS crushing machines. The selective crushing capabilities of these machines take advantage of the huge difference in elastic modulus of the minerals and metals in the slag. The appropriate rotor impact mill (type RPMV), rotor centrifugal crusher (type RSMX) or Rotorshredder (type RS) depends on your scenario and can be determined through testing at our facility in Sonthofen.

Impact Stresses for Selective Comminution - For processing slag, incineration ash and dross

Metal-containing waste, e.g. slag, incineration ash and dross, are formed during the production of metals and are to be recycled as waste-derived materials. To obtain an optimal and marketable separated product from the processing of these material groups, the process parameters must be individually adjusted depending on the required final product, but series of tests conducted at the BHS test centre have shown that the above-mentioned wastederived materials can be processed in the same machine systems despite different their material properties.
